What is Slimming World?
The Slimming World website explains: “Slimming World’s highly effective approach to weight loss is empowering and enabling.
“Out support – online and in group – is based on a deep understanding of how you feel and a passionate desire to help you achieve your personal weight loss goals – and maintain them for life!”
It was created by Margaret Miles–Bramwell in Derbyshire in 1969.
Slimming World focuses on Food Optimising, which consists of three steps: free foods, healthy extras and Syns.
Together these three things are known as Food Optimising.
By following a plan members can regulate their weight loss safely without being hungry or feeling guilty.
The weight management group holds more than 18,000 group meeting in the UK weekly.
How does Slimming World work?
The Slimming World diet bases itself on the age-old weight-loss tradition of consuming less calories than you use.
Members are given a list of free foods which can be eaten in unlimited amounts.
These include fruit, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, pasta, rice, lean meat, fish and eggs.
Those opting to lose weight are also encouraged to swap high-fat foods for low-fat foods that which keep them full for longer.
You are also allowed Healthy Extras, which vary depending on what plan you are on.
Members meet up weekly to discuss their progress and share their stories.
They are also encouraged to stay active to loose weight more efficiently.
The Slimming World Body Magic programme puts emphasis on introducing exercise gradually before finding ways to integrate exercise into everyday life.
In the meetings they can achieve bronze, silver, gold and platinum Body Magic awards.
Members earn a platinum award when they are active five times a week for thirty minutes at a time.
What are Syns?
You can eat all types of food in the Slimming World diet, but there are still some foods which are restricted.
These are known as a Syn, short for synergy, or treat items.
Users are allowed a certain number of Syns every day, which is calculated through individual weight loss plans.
Mostly the number rangers from five to 15 a day, bearing in mind a Syn is usually equivalent to around 20 calories.
Does the Slimming World diet work?
The weight loss group claim members lose 8% of their body weight in six months, and 13% in a year.
Slimming World has countless success stories to prove that the diet works.
Danni Basker, who lose five stone, said: “Slimming World is great because you can still enjoy all your favourite foods – there is no guilt.
“I help my members to choose healthier options in all situations so they can still go out and enjoy themselves without feeling the guilt of sabotaging their ‘diet’.
“Slimming World is not a diet, it’s a healthy lifestyle choice.
“That’s why, when our members achieve their target, they are able to maintain that weight loss. And best of all – they get free lifelong membership.”
