Best supplements for men: Take this vitamin daily to help prevent heart disease

Supplements have increased in popularity over the years, and while most people don’t need to take them and are able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need by eating a healthy, balanced diet, health experts recommend them to people who are at risk of deficiency.

So what are the best supplements for men to take? Vitamin D, vitamin B12, magnesium, potassium, and omega-3 fish oil are among the ranks.

But one in particular, recommended by nutritionist Dr Josh Axe, is vitamin K.

Vitamin K is important for building and maintaining strong bones, blood clotting, and preventing heart disease.

But why might a man be low in this vitamin?

The Dr Josh Axe website explains: “Vitamin K deficiency is more common in men who don’t regularly consume veggies or dairy products, those who have been taking antibiotics or medications for an extended period of time, and men suffering from intestinal problems, such as IBS or inflammatory bowel disease, which interfere with absorption.”

Vitamin K1 is found in many green vegetables, while vitamin K2 is found in dairy products.

The site adds: “The best way to prevent vitamin K deficiency is to eat plenty of different veggies, including green leafy vegetables, broccoli, collards and cabbage, plus some wild-caught fish and cage-free eggs too.”

How much vitamin K do you need to take?

The NHS advises that adults need approximately 1mcg a day of vitamin K for each kilogram of their body weight.

For example, someone who weighs 65kg would need 65mcg a day of vitamin K, while a person who weighs 75kg would need 75mcg a day.

The health body adds: “You should be able to get all the vitamin K you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.

“Any vitamin K your body doesn’t need immediately is stored in the liver for future use, so you don’t need it in your diet every day.”

There are a variety of supplements available to help with more specific health issues men experience, such as stiff joints, hair loss and to boost energy levels.

Another supplement popular among men are those that improve fitness.

A clinical trial, published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, tested 54 male triathletes and found participants improved their 100 minute triathlon by 10 minutes, over a four week course of taking natural pine bark extract Pycnogenol.

Providing comment on the results, lead researcher Dr. Gianni Belcaro said: “This study provides evidence that daily supplementation of Pycnogenol offers a natural approach to help reduce post-workout muscular pain, increase levels of physical performance and get you training again sooner.”

He continued: “Pycnogenol, along with good training and proper nutrition, may help to significantly improve physical fitness and reduce oxidative stress and muscular pain in both those who exercise recreationally and triathletes.”

Pycnogenol is available from health food stores throughout the UK and online.
