Health officials offer tips on staying safe in the heat

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s this weekend, and there are a couple of safety tips officials want you to keep in mind.

Metro officials say it’s most important to stay hydrated. When we sweat, our body loses water, and we have to replace it.

If your children are playing outside, try keeping them in the shade and have them take breaks to rehydrate.

Officials say keeping pets safe is just as important. If you can, take them outside early in the morning or at night.

If they’re outside during the day, put their water in a plastic or light-colored dish. A metal dish only heats the water faster.

"When it gets to 95 or above, there’s a Metro ordinance that says puppies or pregnant dogs have to be brought into an air-conditioned place, so we want people to be aware of those kinds of things too," said Brian Todd with the Metro Health Department.
