You might think that opening a new store a couple of states over would be enough growth to satisfy the owners of Southern Pressed Juicery for now, but you’d be wrong. The local organic cold-pressed juice bar and café is growing its brand of health and wellness even farther with a new line of herbal supplements designed to boost body and mind.
The supplements, which are sold under the name, Wildcrafted, are a product of the 3-year-old SPJ, but represent a new targeted direction of business growth for the brand. While SPJ’s curated juices, and raw and vegan food is popular, it’s limited shelf life prevents mass sale, while the supplements have a two-year shelf life.
“This is the next step for Southern Pressed Juicery,” says Olivia Esquivel, co-owner and founder of SPJ. “It is that big, because we’ve taken it from its conception of this idea and we’ve worked really hard on the blends, the research and on procuring the quality purveyors.”
The leap from juice to supplement might seem like, well, a leap, but it is actually a natural progression, explains Esquivel. It fits the overall wellness mission on which the company was founded. The café has been using products and adaptogens to this point, but Wildcrafted are specifically created to meet customer health needs.

Adaptogens themselves have been used for centuries as part of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicine, Esquivel says. They are like super herbs or mushrooms that when they are ingested, adapt to where your body needs them. They have traditionally been used to help the body heal from, and to resist, stressors. Ginseng is a well-known adaptogen, known to boost overall health.
“We believe in the power of healing plants,” Esquivel says. “We believe that food that populates from the earth rather than a lab can have healing powers and can help your body operate at its optimal level.”
To that end, Wildcrafted is launching with three proprietary blends, Energy, Mind and Beauty, all specially designed to boost function within those body functions. The products are made from herbs and mushrooms sourced from a range of organic producers. Esquivel and her team did nearly a year’s worth of research in designing the products, but the knowledge has been culled over the course of SPJ as well.
Moving forward, Esquivel sees creating more blends, and is already looking into the areas of calm and sleep and also sex and libido.
“For us, it’s how can we give you something you’re not getting somewhere else, and how can we elevate the experience, elevate the product and help you get to a better, healthier version of yourself, Esquivel says.
The products are available at both SPJ stores (Austin just opened in June) and online. And Esquivel hopes to launch a wholesale arm soon that would sell Wildcrafted at other local and possibly national retail outlets as well.
“Part of the struggle has been how do we scale Southern Pressed Juicery other than just brick and mortars, which we are doing as well, with Austin. But we can’t open 50 right now, that takes time and money,” Esquivel says. “This is a chance for us to hit the ground running and get SPJ into the hands of other well-established companies with their own loyal customers without having to worry about juice expiring.”
WIldcrafted is currently available at both Southern Pressed Juicery locations and will soon be available online at http://wildcraftedcollection.com. Each 40 gram jar is $35.
