TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Local kids ate lunch, took home free books and met a cow Friday afternoon!

The Topeka & Shawnee Co. Library hosted ‘Lunch and Learn,’ to promote summer learning while also letting kids enjoy a healthy lunch. The children learned the importance of eating healthy by seeing how cows get milked. They got to watch in the parking lot.

The library says for every week a child isn’t reading, that’s a week they’re behind when school starts.

“We want to give them fun, summer learning activities but we also want to give them some fun books to be able to read because you can read a comic and read a novel, you can read non-fiction, you can read a newspaper,” said Marie Pyko, the Public Services Director for the library. “We don’t really care what people are reading we just want kids to keep reading because then it’ll make it easier when they go back to school in August.”

Topeka Public Schools, Shawnee Co. Parks and Rec, Southwest Dairy Farmers and Harvesters helped make Friday’s event happen.
