From vitamin D to Coenzyme Q10, dietary supplements are a $30 billion dollar industry. But which supplements are beneficial and which can cause harm is not always clear.

Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine is hosting a Natural Supplements Conference this week that aims to help people do just that.

Dr. Robert Bonakdar is an expert on dietary supplements and the founder and director of the conference. His research suggests lifestyle and eating habits cause nutrient deficiencies making people susceptible to diseases.

“I think the latest CDC finding is that only 1 in 10 American’s gets enough fruits and vegetables tells us that were not getting anywhere near the type of dietary quality or quantity that we need to get the nutrients to have a good future and stay away from diseases that we’re trying to avoid,” Bonakdar said.

Bonakdar joins Midday Edition Thursday to talk about what research says about how supplements can help when deficiencies are found.
