CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 13-year-old Cleveland girl is the first flu-related pediatric death in Northeast Ohio, the Cleveland Department of Public Health announced today.

It is the second pediatric flu-related death in Ohio this flu season, after the death of a 3-year-old boy from Highland County in Southwest Ohio was reported earlier this month.

An East Cleveland woman, 94, was the sixth flu death reported in Cuyahoga County this season.

Influenza can be deadly for the young and the elderly. The virus spreads through coughs and sneezes, and symptoms include fever, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

While the current flu season has been mild so far, especially when compared to the tough flu season of 2017-2018, it typically peaks in February.

It’s not too late to get a flu shot, which helps lessen the symptoms of flu and prevents its spread. In Cleveland, shots are available at both the J. Glen Smith Health Center (11100 St. Clair Ave.) and the Thomas McCafferty Health Center (4242 Lorain Rd.). For more information call the CDPH flu hotline at (216) 664-4621.

The flu vaccine also is available through health care providers, clinics and retail pharmacies. Use this link to fine a location near you to get a flu shot. http://www.ccbh.net/flu-links/
