From washing, to peeling, and even chopping a group of kids at the Friendship House in Peoria got hands on experience in the kitchen as part of a free cooking class put on by the Friendship House in collaboration with Peoria Grown and Hy-Vee.

“We believe that everybody should live a very healthy quality of life. Rich people all the way down to the poorest person in this community. So we feel like it’s our responsibility to the people in this community to not only provide food but to show them how to prepare it healthily.” said President of the Friendship House Robert Montgomery

The idea for the classes came from Julie Eliathamby from Peoria Grown. She said many of the kids they serve eat meals by themselves because of parents work schedules. While it is easy to gravitate towards junk food, they want to show young people the benefits to healthy eating.

“If we can educate them about some other choices that are available to them, they may have the tendency to eat more healthy at home and if we can start them young and ingrain that in them, hopefully as they get older it will become at habit for them.” said Eliathamby

One chef in training, 12 year-old Alexis Arreguin said he loves the feeling of accomplishment he gets in the kitchen.

“My favorite part about them is when I finish, I feel like I did a good job on preparing something. I like that part about it.” said Arreguin

The cooking classes take place every 4th Friday of the month. There are also classes for adults that take place every 3rd Friday of the month.

The food and instructor are both donated from Hy-Vee.
