1. Jonah Hill
When it comes to body transformations, none have been as drastic as actor Jonah Hill, who looks virtually unrecognisable in his latest Netflix series Maniac with Emma Stone. Jonah’s first lead role was in Superbad at age 22 where he says he was “living like a frat guy like everyone, drinking beer and eating pizza.” Hill first got skinny in 2011 to star alongside Brad Pitt in Moneyball but his weight has fluctuated in recent years. He chubbed up for Wolf of Wall Street and War Dogs and then lost it again after calling Channing Tatum for diet and exercise tips. These days boxing is Hill’s go-to workout.
2. Khloe Kardashian
Khloe is a self-confessed “beast in the gym” and incredible body transformation scored her the makeover show Revenge Body. The naturally curvy star has talked about being called the ‘fat sister’ compared to her petite siblings, Kourtney and Kim. It was after the collapse of her marriage to Lamar Odom in 2013 that Khloe really started upping her workouts and quickly dropped an impressive 15kg. By the time she welcomed her daughter True in 2018, Khloe’s healthy diet and workout sessions were such a part of her life she had no problems slimming back down to her happy weight post-partum.
3. Sam Smith
When British singer Sam Smith burst on to the music scene in 2012 he wasn’t known for his slim build. “When I was shooting my first music videos,” Smith said in interview with V Magazine, “I just wasn’t happy with the way I looked, so I was trying to control the way the camera moved,” Smith said. It was working with a nutritional therapist and addressing diet that really kick-started his initial weight loss. “I met a woman who has completely changed my life,” he wrote in an early 2017 Instagram caption. “Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone [6.3kg] in two weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food….” A recently bulked up Smith has been resistance training to build serious muscle.
4. Johnny Depp
The Pirates of the Caribbean star shocked fans around the world last year when he reportedly lost around 12 kilos in just a few months. The 54-year-old was photographed looking frail and a shadow of his former self, leading many to speculate that he was going through some kind of health crisis. Though he apparently lost weight for his role in Richard Says Goodbye, where he plays a terminally ill professor, sources close Depp said he us “healthy”, despite his visibly slimmed-down appearance in the pictures, and insisted fans “don’t need to be concerned”.
5. Mama June
Mama June Shannon has gained some kilos since her dramatic weight loss two years ago, but says “I’ve gained a little bit of weight back, but I’m not ever going to be 450 pounds (204 kilos) again.” The reality TV star initially lost 130 kilos and went down to a size 4 by walking 5-8 kilometres a day, drinking green smoothies and working with a personal trainer. The New York Daily News reported in March 2016 that Mama June decided to undergo gastric sleeve weight loss surgery to boost her weight loss after it plateaued.
6. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera is another star whose weight has yo-yoed over the years. During her first pregnancy with her son Max, she gained almost 20 kilos and had a hard time losing the weight afterwards. In 2013 though, 18 kilos doing daily yoga, and using a low-calorie meal service for her diet. She says the key was taking time off from The Voice to de-stress, and achieve her weight loss goals.
7. Kelly Osbourne
She shot to fame on the reality TV show The Osbournes, and since then the daughter of Ozzy and Sharon has launched a career in music and TV. While her career was on the up, Kelly’s weight was fluctuating wildly and she revealed she was an “emotional eater.” In recent years Kelly has slimmed down dramatically, after a stint in rehab which cused her to look at all of her habits. She went on to lose almost 26kg by gym work out, competing on Dancing with the Stars and eating a vegan diet. The reality TV star often posts snapshots and videos of her plant-based diet, championing her favourite vegan dish – vegan mac n cheese. “I used to think being a vegan was boring. Now I have more fun with food now than I ever have before.
8. Jennifer Hudson
The Oscar winning actress and singer slimmed down from a size 16 to a size 6 thanks to doing Weight Watchers after she had her son David in 2009 and has managed to keep her svelte figure ever since. “I had to break my diet mentality. I used to deprive myself, thinking that was healthy. I didn’t eat pasta, fried food, red meat. I hadn’t had pizza in 10 years,” she told Self in 2011. “If you’re on a strict diet that says you shouldn’t have any carbs or this or that, your body won’t function the way it should. I know now that I can eat anything I want and still lose or maintain my weight. It’s about portions and balance.”
