SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) Veterans are learning to cook healthy meals. The Salem VA Medical Center held a cooking demo for service men and women. Staff said the rate of diabetes and obesity is significantly higher in the veterans, so understanding how to make healthy meals are important. They believe showing them is more impactful than just telling them about healthy recipes.
“I think the biggest thing is knowledge is power,” said Brooke Ward, MOVE PRogram Coordinator, and Clinic Dietician. “We can tell somebody something, but to be able to show it and let them try it is so impactful. You can tell someone we are going to make you cauliflower stir fry rice, but to taste it and realize how good it is, can really make a difference.
They hope to make this a monthly event for the vets.
